Carabella (*Rushan AHSB x Cariala), a mare bred by the late Gari Dill-Marlow, heavy with the weight of a spring foal, playfully approaches after a heavy December snow. Carabella was one of Gari’s most treasured mares and is now an important part of our broodmare band as well as a riding horse.

Winter settles upon us, and soft, plush coats replace the horses’ radiant, summer sheen from warmer days. Their breath becomes visible in wisps of white smoke that flow from wide nostrils. Their eyes widen with the reflection of a world in hibernation, and their wildness is loosed from oppressive summer heat. They are more fully themselves, less domestic, their gazes transfixed on apparitions we cannot see. Cold awakens something primordial in them. They leap, strike, toss their manes and challenge darkening days, eager to feel heat course through desert-forged veins.

Winter months bring us closer to the Arabian’s untamed beauty that leads our souls toward them. We can only hope to borrow momentary concessions of their individual wills in the pursuit of our dreams. Their psyches are untainted by our own human ambitions as winter grants us a momentary ingress to their unconquerable souls.

As the holiday season lends us time with our horses and our families, we are free to cherish them more fully … a gift of graciousness and beauty. May we treasure these moments that renew our spirits.

Moments Light (Thee Masterpiece x Moments Sequel) and AHW Aristocrat BHF Shahs Lullaby (Bey Shah x Khemoroyale), dance in the pasture together, gilded in holiday ribbons. Moments Light was my first Arabian mare and has been a phenomenal riding horse and broodmare. BHF Shahs Lullaby, a permanent fixture in our pastures, has produced 11 foals who have captured titles in halter and performance. We have one of her most beautiful daughters to carry on her legacy.
