COVER STORY

ON THE COVER: RA NOCTURNE

During her pregnancy, Aleeyah lived at Mark and Deb Burke’s Amethyst Acres Equine Center, Inc. in Buchanan, Virginia. Amethyst Acres is just minutes from Greg and Monique’s farm, Rockbridge Arabians. Mark called Shawn as soon as Nocturne was born, and she said, “Mark never calls me about the colts, but he said, ‘You might want to get out here. Your mare Aleeyah just had a pretty impressive colt. By the way, he is black.’”

I BELIEVE IN MIRACLES

Angela Alioto watched in mute horror at her weanling filly, who sat sprawled on the stable floor. She struggled to get up, her spindly front legs pushed out in front as she tried desperately to will her lifeless hind legs to move.

2024 SCOTTSDALE

In 1952, a small group of Arabian enthusiasts had an idea to introduce more people to the Arabian horse: an exhibition of the breed in the Phoenix area, which they dubbed the “All Arabian Horse Show.” There were a couple of early, small events at a modest resort venue called the Casa Blanca Inn, but the group wanted to expand into a more impressive site and draw horses from outside the area.

SCOTTSDALE: THE JUDGES SPEAK

Arabian Horse World caught up with some of the 2024 Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show judges. First-time Scottsdale judge, Ashley Toye, was elated by the experience. “This was unlike any other show I have judged before,” she says. “The quality was off the charts, and being center ring with so many judges was a unique experience.”

2024 ARABIAN BREEDERS WORLD CUP

In 2007, a group of dedicated American breeders were attending a European show that, to them, was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of the Arabian horse. This experience led them to conclude that they wanted to create a show in the United States with a similar European feel.

AHW’S WOMEN OF THE WORLD

Arabian Horse World’s annual tribute to some of the outstanding women who have made the Arabian horse part of their lives. It’s our pleasure to share these exceptional women’s devotion to the Arabian horse — they are indeed, the “Women of the World.”

IN MEMORY OF SUE MEYER

The Arabian horse community lost one of its most passionate leaders with the passing of Susan Meyer earlier this Spring. Sue lived a life of beautiful duality, exemplifying traits that are rare in today’s world.

37th ANNUAL DARLEY AWARDS

Nothing is better for a recently crowned racing champion than to support the honor by returning to the winner’s circle. Again and again. RB Mary Lylah was honored in February as the outstanding 3-year-old filly of 2023 at the Darley Awards held in Houston. She secured the award by winning consecutive stakes last fall at Lone Star Park in Dallas.

THE STATE OF THE STRAIGHT EGYPTIAN ARABIAN

Arabian Horse World has asked me to write a few words about “the state of the Straight Egyptian horse in the US today.” To arrive at this point, we need to start at the beginning.
