Judith Forbis, a legendary figure in Arabian horse breeding and the proud owner of the esteemed Ansata Arabian Stud in Mena, Arkansas, recently celebrated her 90th birthday at the U.S. Arabian Horse Nationals show in Tulsa. The event was graciously hosted by Stan Morey, Executive Director of the Arabian Horse Association (AHA), alongside Walter Mishek.

To kick off the birthday celebrations, a private cocktail party was held at the beautiful home of Frank and Robin Semple in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Semples, longtime friends of Walter, opened their spacious home to accommodate some of Judith’s closest friends. Guests included several who traveled from overseas, including Jenni and Paul Ogden from Qatar, Omar Sakr from Egypt, Bart Buggenhout from Belgium, and many who drove or flew to Tulsa from states near and far. Attendees enjoyed champagne, delicious hors d’oeuvres, a festive birthday cake adorned with sparkler candles, and a sneak peek at a tribute video produced by Darryl Larsen. Stories were shared from years past to present, laughs filled the room, and a heartfelt letter was read by David Gardner, a dear friend who had everyone laughing. Pyramid Society Foundation President Keri Wright gave a toast to “Queen Judi,” and all raised a glass to wish her a happy birthday, good health, and many more adventures in the future. On that note, Judi didn’t wait long to get on a plane to London a few weeks later, followed by a week in Florence, Italy.

On the day of the AHA celebration, guests participated in a delightful wine and cheese reception in the commercial exhibitor area, followed by the video presentation in Ford Arena, which highlighted Judith’s impressive journey and the impactful legacy of Ansata Arabian Stud. Barbara Cole from Dallas commented, “Celebrating Judith’s 90th birthday at the U.S. Nationals was like attending a U.N. conference, a July 4th celebration at the U.S. Capitol, and a stroll down the Hollywood Walk of Fame, all rolled into one! The Straight Egyptian horse community has seen Judith serve as a student, advocate, and dedicated preservationist. Everyone felt blessed and inspired to celebrate with her.”

Judith Forbis’s story began in 1959 when she and her husband, Donald Forbis, imported two exceptional Straight Egyptian Arabian yearling fillies: Ansata Bint Mabrouka and Ansata Bint Zaafarana, both sired by the illustrious stallion Nazeer from the Egyptian Agricultural Organization in Cairo. Their acquisition also included a remarkable yearling colt, Ansata Ibn Halima, sired by Nazeer. This colt would become a significant sire in the Arabian breed worldwide, affirming the Forbises’ keen eye for excellence.

Initially based in Chickasha, Oklahoma, the Forbises fell in love with Mena, Arkansas, during a visit with friends. This visit led them to purchase the historic Commonwealth College farm, where they established the world-renowned Ansata Arabian Stud. Their dedication to breeding and showcasing exceptional Straight Egyptian Arabian horses earned them notable success in American Class A and international shows until the farm was sold in 2008 following Don Forbis’s passing.

The celebration brought together countless friends, breeders, and Arabian horse enthusiasts, all eager to honor Judith Forbis and her remarkable contributions to the world of horse breeding. The gathering not only highlighted her achievements but also served to inspire the next generation of horse lovers and breeders. Breeder and esteemed author Christie Metz shared, “The celebration of Judi’s 90th birthday is possibly one of the most fun events I have ever attended. Walter and Cheryl Mishek, along with their dear friends Frank and Robin Semple and Stan Morey, hosted a memorable event with friends from all over the world. The video produced by Darryl Larsen recapped Ansata Arabian Stud’s amazing accomplishments over the past 60 years and highlighted many of Judi’s books. On Saturday evening, the entire horse community had the privilege of viewing the video premiere in the center ring of Ford Arena. As Judi’s friend for over thirty years, it was so much fun to see her joy, happiness, and good nature, allowing for a light-hearted roast at the private cocktail party. She looked fabulous and happy, surrounded by friends on this special occasion. Long live Queen Judi!

Greetings from around the world to Judith

“Happy Birthday, Judi! Today, we celebrate not only the day you were born but also the remarkable woman you are. Meeting you this past spring in Morocco felt like fate! Since that first conversation, when your passion for the Arabian horse lit up the Mazagan conference room, you’ve been a true inspiration to all of us. Our shared talks about strains, color codes, and embryo transfer have inspired me greatly. You hold a wealth of knowledge and grace that brings out the very soul of these noble, blessed creatures. Though you may have stepped away from breeding, your legacy and spirit continue to shape the Arabian horse world in profound ways. Here’s to you Judi and to the many journeys still to come. May this year bring you happiness, new adventures, and the same joy and experiences you’ve shared with others.”
